Course Information:
In Ontario, the WHMIS legislation that came into effect in 1988 provides not only for initial training but also for annual updates to ensure that employees remain familiar with the basic concepts and requirements of WHMIS.
OHSA & CSA standards dictate that anyone working on construction or industrial projects must have written proof of participation in a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) course.
This generic program offers theoretical instruction and testing in the basic WHMIS concepts. The purpose is to familiarize workers of any hazardous products or materials in the workplace.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Recognize:
- the purpose and necessity of WHMIS in the workplace
- hazardous materials in the workplace
- the three main elements of WHMIS
Identify:
- warning labels
- six classes of hazardous materials
- the symbols and classifications
- locate and use a material safety data sheet (MSDS)
Explain the general duties of the employer to train employees
Identify other components of WHMIS.
